The year 2011 saw the construction and inauguration of the Ortoll Primary Reproductive Health Care Center (OPRHCC). The OPRHCC is a project of the PGH Medical Foundation Inc. for the Department of OB-GYN of the Philippine General Hospital. This undertaking was realized through the generous donation of Mr. Jorge Ortoll and Ms. Inmaculada Ortoll-Mutuc. The two storey project stands in a 600 square meter area within the PGH Compound and will be a Birthing Center that would admit obstetrical patients for normal delivery within a short stay of not more than 24 hours.  The overall objective of the project is to accommodate the increasing number of normal delivery admissions which, at present, is limited since abnormal cases are prioritized by the Dept. of OB-GYN in its admission policy. Hence, several uncomplicated cases have to be turned away and referred to other hospitals due to lack of space. This also results in fewer cases necessary for obstetrical instructions for students of UP College of Medicine, UP College of Nursing and rotating students from the Baler extension of UPCM. With the opening of the Ortoll birthing center, an expected increase in obstetrical services as well as expansion of teaching cases for our residents, students and interns is assured. Services of said center will also accommodate Dilatation and Curettage for gynecologic cases which cannot be accommodated in the main OB-GYN unit of PGH.

Heralding the ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony were PGHMFI President, Dr. Gregorio T. Alvior Jr., Dr. Esperanza I. Cabral, Mr. Jorge Z. Ortoll, Ms. Inmaculada Ortoll-Mutuc and PGH Director Dr. Jose C. Gonzales.  Blessing of the facility was officiated by Father Maximo Barbero SJ, PGH Chaplain

PGHMFI donates Cautery Machine to Division of Urology

February 11, 2013 By PGHMFI

PGHMFI President Dr. Gregorio T. Alvior Jr. (center), Mme. Lolita Escobar—Mirpuri-PGHMFI Corporate Secretary(7th from Left), Dr. Telesforo E. Gana Jr.—Urology Unit Head (1st from Left), Dr. Eduardo Gatchalian—Dept. of Surgery Chairman ( 6th from Left) with Urology Consultants and Residents.

The division of Urology of the Philippine General Hospital received a new cautery machine compatible their urologic endoscopic equipment.

For the last 10 years, the surgery department of the Urology division has managed to function using a single cautery machine for their operations, both charity and pay. Based on their census, the division caters to more than 10,000 patients per year with prostate problems. Their endoscopic equipment has compatibility issues that is why utmost care and periodic maintenance measures were set to keep their cautery machine, the only one well-matched  to the said endoscopic apparatus, efficiently working.  But the inevitable has happened when said machine finally broke down and was found irreparable due to unavailability of spare parts. Hence, their long list of patients in line for admission are now on hold. As much as they want to alleviate their sufferings and cure them of their diseases, they are hindered by the lack of equipment. Through the PGHMF’s objectives, aside from its assistance to indigent patients, is to provide medical equipment and machines to the hospital. Thus, the foundation extended its support to the Urology division by donating a Valleylab Force FX cautery unit amounting to Php 600,000.00. With this development, the depatment’s services such as TURP (Transurethral resection of the Prostate) and TURBT (Transurethral resection of bladder tumor) are expected to resume immediately.  This donation is in line with PGHMF’s effort of assisting PGH in providing quality health care to all its patients.
